Vincent Van Gogh
Vincent Van Gogh was born in Holland in 1853, and began drawing when he was 11. Twenty years later, he painted his first great work, "The Potato Eaters." Van Gogh went on to complete 872 paintings, 1019 drawings and 150 watercolors in the next 10 years.
Although Van Gogh's life was marked by emotional instability and mental breakdowns, his art communicates genius and sensitivity, and his paintings are among the most sought after in the world. In 1990, "The Portrait of Dr. Gachet" sold for $82.5 million, and in 1998, Van Gogh's "Self Portrait" sold for $71.5 million.
