Miles Dewey Davis (1926-1991) was an American jazz trumpeter, songwriter and band leader who had an incalculable influence on the 20th century American music scene. Davis was born in Alton, Illinois, and one year later his family moved to East St. Louis. His music prowess was developed at home -- by his mother, who was an accomplished jazz pianist, and his dentist father, who gave Davis a trumpet when he was 13 years old. Although he struggled with cocaine addiction during his lifetime, he eventually won the battle and was productive and enthusiastic in his later years. Davis' trumpet playing was considered to be quite complex and technical. Since his death, Davis has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the St. Louis Walk of Fame, Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame, and "Down Beat's" Jazz Hall of Fame.
