One of the most populous cities in the world, Las Vegas is a world-renowned resort city known for its casinos, shopping, and entertainment. When the area was first settled by Spaniards in the 1800s, artesian wells dotted the valley, creating areas of green in the desert; so the town was called Las Vegas, which in Spanish means "The Meadows."
