I know a guy who had a great collection of old rock posters — stuff like Van Halen, John Lennon, Mick Jagger, Metallica, Keith Moon, Jefferson Starship. You get the picture. Most of them were vintage first editions with original signatures, so they were worth a ton of money.

Anyway, my buddy got the chance to display his posters at a convention up in Alberta last year, so he packed them in his car and headed out from Seattle. Then he got caught in a monster snowstorm. It snowed so hard and fast that he had to pull over and eventually his car got stuck and he couldn’t get out. Then the car ran out of gas and he couldn’t use the heater any more.

POSTERS OR LIFE

So he had to make a choice: Die with a one-of-a-kind rock music poster collection in the back seat or burn the posters to keep warm. He told me he cried while they burned. After he got rescued he was pretty bummed that he’d lost his collection, but then he found this website and he was able to replace the burned posters — not the originals with autographs and stuff — but at least he got the pictures (which is the main thing). And oh yeah, he’s still alive.

THE TRAGEDY

Exactly thirty minutes before my boyfriend was due to pick me up for the prom, my white cat, my white bed, and my white prom dress were smeared with lip gloss and cat hair.

THE SOLUTION

Turns out the Prom was having a contest for the most “creative and unusual” prom dress. I didn’t think lip gloss and cat hair would work, so I desperately scoped out my room to see what I could pull together fast. Then I saw them: a dozen beautiful, perfect-for-the-prom posters begging me to take them to the dance.

Quickly I pulled them all down, grabbed a roll of lime green duct tape and got to work. The Marilyn Monroe posters became the new bodice (where else would she go?). Two Entourage posters became the train. The face of New Moon’s Edward went below Marilyn (right over my heart). I salvaged the straps from my real dress, slapped on some tape, and the top was done. The skirt came together with “Imagine,” “Endless Summer,” Audrey Hepburn, James Dean, and Batman’s Dark Knight. I had to put Rosie the Riveter somewhere, so I gave her a place of honor on my rear.

THE PRIZE

And I was ready to go to the prom. My mother fainted, but my boyfriend was cool and pretty sure I would win the contest. And of course I did. Hands down. So thank you, posters.com, for not only getting me to my senior prom, but for making me a winner!

Vettriano is well-known and greatly admired for his extensive philanthropy, donating his paintings for auction to benefit various charities, hospices, and trusts.
